Remember folks, it is ALWAYS morally and ethically justified to pirate Adobe software. They’re a garbage, predatory company that needs to crash and burn.

Why justify when you can switch to other apps? Even with pirating you’re still supporting them and their stranglehold on the creative industry. Fuck em proper.

For those not on Bluesky, Adobe got bullied so hard by basically every artist the site from this post that they straight up left. They were ratio’d out of existence. It’s hilarious.

I can’t keep getting this whiplash where I lose all faith in humanity and then humanity goes and does something awesome and hilarious like this.

For those on Bluesky, this is a perfect example of why Bluesky will enshittify since this kind of brutal honesty towards rich people and large corporations won’t be tolerated on a coporate social network that is working to turn as big of a profit as possible.

This period of people being able to clown on powerful corporations like this will quickly come to an end as soon as investors put the pressure on Bluesky to return a profit.

You’re probably correct, but the possibility of federation does provide a safety valve. Any step in the wrong direction taken by BlueSky only makes it more likely someone will set up a new node.

BlackSky is heading full speed that way. A lot of users would like their own space regardless. The money doesn’t line up right now, but being able to port our information out means that that switch will flip sometime soon.

Look you aren’t going to stop this bad thing going on, so why not just support the bad thing going on and stop complaining? Personally I have made a lot of money off this bad thing so I am struggling to see what is bad about it? Your numerous examples about this bad thing hurting other people and the earth don’t work on me since I have spent a long time listening to white guys explain to me how to completely destroy my capacity for empathy for other human beings and now I am functionally a sociopath.

Besides anyways, all art is stealing so what is wrong with condescendingly shitting on artists and art in general as an idea by drowning spaces that used to be public squares full of vibrant human art with crappy cynical slop generated by a computer?

There are way more affordable options out there, some are free.

      • For tablet painting: Krita and free
      • For photoshop: I use affinity, but Canvas just bought them. Not sure how they’re going to be in the future. Canvas is evil. It’s around $125/2 or 3 years or so. I haven’t used Gimp in awhile, I might look at them again.
      • For Premiere Pro, Audition and After Effects: Buy the studio version of Davinci Resolve, it has all of them. It’s a lifetime purchase and cheap if you think of that way. Don’t lose your code though.
      • For 3D: Blender and free. It keeps getting better and better.

I’m not a professional, but I’ve been using Gimp 3, and it works great for my purposes (mostly making memes and weird net art, tbh).

Also Blender is S tier. So good. I even use it to make sprite sheets using 3D models as base.

They’re fast enshitifiers, they’ll buy great products and make them subscription or way worse. An example of a way worse way is Unsplash, where they would offer free products and you could buy some of the photos. The ones you have to purchase used to be at the top or bottom, like PixaBay does. But now they’re mixed in and random. I don’t use it anymore. They ruin everything to the point where if I see they’re involved, I don’t use the product. I know it’ll turn bad soon. I’ve bought from Pixabay occasionally. They might enshitify too, but so far they’ve been great.

yeah, in that sense i don’t trust them either. they may not be openly evil but it’s a matter of time before this becomes more obvious. i feel this way about discord also (it annoys me sometimes but it’s still usable, but i know this won’t last long). let’s hope people come up with a better alternative soon

i only found out about open source culture this year as i was looking into the fediverse (i don’t know much about tech) and it has given me a lotta hope 🤗

It’s different and a tad clunky, but there are some things that were better when I switched. I’ve been off adobe for about 4 or 5 years now, so it may be not what you need or want. I think they have a free trial. But again, that one time cost may switch to subscription after this release, Canva is known to be enshittifiers.

          I’m assuming you’ve already tried Scribus? scribus.net

If not, worth a pop (again?). You can export an existing indesign project as an idml file, and import that into Scribus and see what’s broken :)

How well it’ll work is a little dependent on how complicated your projects are, or how embedded you are in Indesign or the wider Adobe ecosystem. In truth, I don’t know the full extent of Indesign’s abilities - but you can absolutely use Scribus to produce professional large scale graphics and short run publications etc for print though - though that’s obviously a little dependent on what format/spec your printer wants off you.

If you’re just using it for single page posters/graphics etc, Inkscape covers a lot of the same ground too.

It warms my heart to see all the Adobe hate and people switching to other things more and more. And I say that as a professional designer who has to pay my adobe tax every year to stay employed. Every person I see switch increases the chance I’ll get to kick them to the curb someday myself.

I found an open source replacement for Lightroom that finally worked (others I tried crashed loading my raws). While testing it, my subscription renewed (I can take criticism that I should have known and cancelled before renewal, but…) I then tried cancelling right after, but Adobe only gives a grace period on first purchase, not renewals. If subscription automatically charges, that money is gone.

nonono, go back there is a way. you have to battle through their FAQ, and then their AI assistant, when you finally arrive at the point of talking to a human being then they might be able to just undo that for you, i don’t know if there’s a deadline for giving back money after you’ve been charged, but if it was a day or two ago i’m sure it’s not too late

it worked for me with adobe and netflix, they barely even asked why aside from what is required of them “why r u leaving i need it for a survey” type of thing. it’s a sleazy move to hide that you can get your money back, they try to squeeze just a little bit more out of you, but you if embrace your inner Karen there’s a chance!

i’m pretty sure it’s not, since if you get through their bullshit AI assistant and talk to a human they can just undo it without a fuss if it hasn’t been too long since you’ve been charged

i’m guessing they’re counting on people just giving up whilst defending themselves with “Your Honour people can technically do that, see they just need to contact support :)” all whilst desperately trying to hide that option so you give up and let them have your money

What has Adobe done to fuel my creativity? 25 years of copyright protection on their apps. And in all of that time, I have never paid to use a legit version of their most current app. Why? Because their DRM is overengineered and full of weaknesses that can easily be exploited by even the most novice user. Their paranoia combined with their incompetence has saved me tens of thousands of dollars over the decades.

    Thanks Adobe!

I don’t think it’s incompetence, exactly. If you’re not going to pay for Photoshop (Lightroom, Audition, etc…), Adobe would rather you use a pirated Photoshop as opposed to learning something else. Because even a pirated version helps them keep their stranglehold on the market.

It’s the same reason Microsoft doesn’t really crack down on pirated versions of Windows.

They could crack down more on pirated Photoshop, but they don’t want to.

The money is in the commercials licensing, and people who can’t afford Creative Cloud pirating it and learning it is good for them when they need software for work later.

I’m a massive fan of FOSS. For my GIS work, I use QGIS over ESRI. For 3D modeling, I use Blender. For streaming video, I use OBS. Many FOSS solutions are extremely polished, and even for those that are clunky, they can be made to do what you need with a little work.

But when it comes to photo editing, the reality is Adobe’s overpriced market leaders also happen to be far and away the best products. It’s not even close. Photoshop and Lightroom are untouched by the competition, paid or free. They’re simply excellent products that provide functionality that isn’t replicated elsewhere.

I’ve been legally using their shit for two decades. It’s a fucking nightmare. I have to use their app to login in conjunction to my pc because they restrict us to TWO machines at a time. I have 4 I regularly use, so it’s just a huge hassle.

I block their connections now to avoid this, and again, I PAY THEM, and I’m just ONE PERSON. Every person in charge at this company is a clown.

r/piracy has a megathread with an easy tutorial on how to make that work, it’s honestly so easy it made me feel dumb for ever paying for adobe. you just have to run like one app, and then make your firewall block all outgoing connections for each of the .exes, the only app that doesn’t work despite that is lightroom BUT lightroom classic is fully functional and the same if not better, so no loss there
