  • I am not one to force monogamy on people, though I personally am not interested in being with anyone but my partner. That being said, I think it’s wrong for anyone to violate a partner’s trust. I find it messed up that your high school peer bragged about betraying someone who she claimed to care about (at the time). In a nutshell, it seems like it would be good for society if we got over our puritanical zeal for enforcing monogamy, since some people clearly are wired to need multiple physical partners while still wanting to emotionally connect to one person. But I personally would continue to only be with my chosen partner.

  • I remember trying to investigate using crypto as a replacement for international bank transfers. The gas fees were much larger than the greatly inflated fee my bank was charging. Another time, I used crypto to donate to a hacker I liked the work of. I realized the crypto transfer was actually more traceable when accounting for know your customer laws and the public ledger. That was when I realized crypto was truly useless. AI is mildly useful when coding, to point me to packages I wouldn’t have heard of, provide straightforward examples. That’s the only time I use it. The tech industry and investor class are desperate for it to be the next world-changing thing which is leading them to slap it on everything. That will eventually wear off.

  • This story is about domesticated honeybees, which have been declining for decades due to Colony Collapse Disorder and other stressors. Native North American bees are in their own long-term decline, with 1 in 4 species at risk of extinction. However, domesticated honeybees are tremendously important for the pollination and yield of many crops important to humans, and this population drop, thought to be the largest annual losses seen, should be considered in the context of the longer decline, and the possibility that we could hit a tipping point when pollination, and a crucial pillar of our food system, could fail.

  • A lot of them are beyond help. Brains too melted. But there are some people who might not have turned out to vote, due to apathy, or getting hung up on specific issues they were unhappy with Biden about, who are now realizing their mistake. I wish these people had been paying attention, and voted more proactively rather than reactively. Everything he’s doing now was warned about.

Self-hosting and FOSS are the way to go. We saw this demonstrated when Raspberry Pi started acting stupidly as a company. There are so many alternatives that it is easy to switch. Unfortunately some things are pretty tough to self-host, like email and anonymizing VPN. But there are a lot of low-hanging fruit that makes it less painful to divest from bad companies.

  • On 16 October 2023, he condemned Hamas’ actions as barbaric and offered himself as a hostage in exchange for captive Israeli children held in Gaza during the 2023 Israel–Hamas war.

Pizzaballa has advocated for an end to the 2023 Israel–Hamas War and the Israeli occupation of Palestine.[17] Pizzaballa was a signatory to the “Statement on the Escalating Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza” which condemned attacks on civilians, called for de-escalation and called for humanitarian aid to enter Gaza. His statement was criticized by Israeli foreign minister Eli Cohen.[18] On his visit to Bethlehem on Christmas Eve 2023, Pizzaballa donned a Palestinian keffiyeh and expressed a desire for peace in the region.[19]
