“I’m gonna make Chevapchichi out of it.”
The leading theory is that scooping the litter box throws the smell of feces into the air, which might attract predators (which is the reason they bury their poop, to hide the smell)
Since they think you’re doing something dangerous, they want to keep watch for predators
My cat used to wait for me to clean the litter box. Sometimes she’d look in it and walk away if it had too many clumps, but then use it immediately after I clean it.
I’ve had the same conversation with my dog when I pick up her poop after telling her to leave the Canadian goose poop on the ground.

Cat poop is valuable
Cat has a point. When I had cats, they ALWAYS got weirded out everytime I cleaned their box. Karmalee especially would run back into her litter box, dig around in the fresh litter, then look at me like “WHAT HAVE YOU DONE??? WHERE’S MY TREASURE???”
She wouldn’t poop. Just dig around trying to find the missing poop. Then she’d look at me like a weirdo. She was very judgemental everytime I cleaned her box.
Speed on the other hand would look at me in confusion. Like “…but why? Why do you collect the poop? What am I not getting here? Help me understand…”
I hope you take this the right way when I say that you sound like you have lost your mind. Please, for our sakes, don’t ever find it. 😜
It’s like how my one cat always comes into the bathroom and looks at me like I’m crazy whenever I’m taking a bath. “Why would you do that to yourself?”
One of mine legitimately gets angry when I scoop his poop, and even more upset when I do a full litter change. I have to wait until he’s napping so that I can get at least part way through the process before he comes to yell at me. If I’m not fast enough, he’ll even nip at my feet and/or (soft paw) swat at me.
Mine will yell at me if hers isn’t clean. Though my cat will yell at me if the house is full of air, so who can even tell?
So, that’s what makes all of his complaints even crazier! I’ve heard multiple stories about cats that wouldn’t even use a box after it’s been used once, or at least very high standards for cleanliness!
For mine, I have multiple different boxes for them, but they each have their own preferences. I have tried waiting until the box that my oldest prefers is so gross that he’s no longer using it, a d has moved to a different box, but even then, he gets crazy mad at me for touching it. I’ve tried sprinkling some used litter in the new box for him, so that it still smells like him, and he still gets very angry!
I wish I had that cat. Mine is of the variety that one day (I think she got a UTI and that created an association between the box and pain) decided that she will not pee in a box where she can see poo and will instead elect to pee next to the box. Sometimes even if it’s clean she won’t use it.
I finally had to invest in reusable pee pads for her after going through a pack of 50 disposables with no consistent correction in behavior. I also got a sifting wood pellet box for easier maintenance and a silica crystal box in another room for good measure. And line the inappropriate areas she wants to pee on with tin foil so she gets the message that it’s not a good place to do that. And a big ol gallon of anti icky poo for whatever falls through the cracks.
She’s getting better since I tightened up the tin foil boundary though!
I guess he feels like he’s achieving something. Everyone’s got to have a hobby.
Reminds me of the “caravan” episode of Top Gear, where the guys did the British equivalent of trailer camping, and when they arrived at the camp site they asked some other folks there at the campsite what they do when they’re there and the woman replied “fill up the loo.”
Sounds like you guys need a litter robot. It disappears, so the cats don’t have time to understand what happened to it.
One of the boxes that he gets angry about me cleaning is automatic, but it’s a "PetSafe ScoopFree Crystal Classic", not a Litter Robot, so it only scoops solid waste to one side. The Litter Robots were too tall for the space I had previously, and as long as my current box works, I just can’t justify something a few hundred bucks on adding another box.
I foster, so I get to see a wide variety of illnesses and learn about their early symptoms, many of which are diarrhea or other abnormal poops. My foster fail had an intussusception, likely caused by irritable bowel disease/syndrome (IBD/IBS). As much as I would absolutely love to spend waaaaay less time thinking about/looking at poop, I just don’t see any practical way around it without putting the health of my cats at risk.
Source, please?
It is insane to me how allergic to giving credit and sources some corners of Lemmy can be 🤦🏻♂️
holy shit for a moment I thought they meant the source on cats actually thinking this when their caregiver cleans up their poo
Hahaha. I’m now thinking of my question in that context and it makes this whole thing so much funnier.
It’s often a matter of people re-sharing content from other platforms, where the source had already been stripped…
Yeah well the bottom border is suspiciously smaller than the sides and top. Like someone cropped the source off…
I know it’s Kasia Babis but not sure where the original is other than, say
Thank you!
