hardware seems solid, software is so old even SSL certificates are out of date. I downloaded the ISRG Root X1 certificate to update them and even then stock safari doesn’t work with many webpages, including apple’s.
recently I updated to security patches released in 2017 and that’s about all I can do with this notebook.
I don’t see my model listed on OpenCore Legacy Patcher
If you know of any way to upgrade the software, let me know.
Otherwise, wiping it and installing a linux distro seems the way to go
It will run macOS 11 Big Sur, which isn’t fully out of date yet.

You will want to install via USB probably. See "use a bootable installer " on the link above.
I would wipe/install.
Just FYI, asklemmy is intended for interesting and open-ended subjects of discussion, not for single-answer support problems like this, so I won’t be surprised if this thread is deleted.
That said, I feel your machine should be compatible with opencore. Its running Yosemite 10.10 which meets the minimum.
When checking your model make sure you are looking in the right place - press cmd+space, type “system information” and go there. Should be an entry like “MacBookPro[number],[number]” - not the model number, but the device identifier.
I personally have an older Macbook pro which is running Linux, so that’s also a decent option if you want to do it. Good luck!
