I don’t think it’s dark. I think that’s a hermit crab, who live in shells that they find. As they grow, they find larger shells and abandon their old one. So I think this hermit crab is just living in Carl’s old shell, and I suppose Carl has moved on to more spacious habitations.

Except the other 2 guys are snails, which implies Carl was too, and snails don’t outgrow their shells.
