"“What they were telling me was counterintuitive to everything I’d heard at Microsoft about ‘customer first,’” Harris said. “Now they’re telling me it’s not ‘customer first,’ it’s actually ‘business first.’”
DiCola, Harris’ then-supervisor, told ProPublica the race to dominate the market for new and high-growth areas like the cloud drove the decisions of Microsoft’s product teams. “That is always like, ‘Do whatever it frickin’ takes to win because you have to win.’ Because if you don’t win, it’s much harder to win it back in the future. Customers tend to buy that product forever.”
From their about page:
ProPublica is an independent, nonprofit newsroom that produces investigative journalism with moral force. We dig deep into important issues, shining a light on abuses of power and betrayals of public trust — and we stick with those issues as long as it takes to hold power to account.
With a team of more than 150 dedicated journalists, ProPublica covers a range of topics including government and politics, business, criminal justice, the environment, education, health care, immigration, and technology. We focus on stories with the potential to spur real-world impact. Among other positive changes, our reporting has contributed to the passage of new laws; reversals of harmful policies and practices; and accountability for leaders at local, state and national levels.
Investigative journalism requires a great deal of time and resources, and many newsrooms can no longer afford to take on this kind of deep-dive reporting. As a nonprofit, ProPublica’s work is powered primarily through donations. The vast bulk of the money we spend goes directly into world-class, award-winning journalism. We are committed to uncovering the truth, no matter how long it takes or how much it costs, and we practice transparent financial reporting so donors know how their dollars are spent.
ProPublica was founded in 2007–2008 with the belief that investigative journalism is critical to our democracy. Our staff remains dedicated to carrying forward the important work of exposing corruption, informing the public about complex issues, and using the power of investigative journalism to spur reform.
and by continuing to give the people the right to vote adds a veil of legitimacy to the power of the government so there is less of a chance of a uprising.
There isnt anything inately bad about sugar
Well in moderation sugar isn’t too bad. The problem comes when food manufacturers start adding sugar to foods so it will taste better and if you are not paying attention to the content you can consume a significant amount in a day.
The one that gets me is that if the Universe is infinite but how matter can organize itself is finite (albeit a very large number) then there is another galaxy just like ours, another Earth just like ours, and there is another GoofSchmoofer writing this exact some thing in the exact same way somewhere out there.
And if this is true then how many GoofSchmoofer’s are there in this infinite Universe?
What’s crazy to me is this is a well known problem yet the people that have the ability to legislate this have just 100% ignored it.
The presidential candidates in the US either completely ignore it (trump) or give a solution of building 3 million new homes (Harris). No one wants to actually start regulating the number of homes that an individual or company can own. It’s an obvious solution to the problem yet, complete silence from the law makers.
I also choose this man’s dead wife.
I hope you forgot to put an /s at the end of your comment
I remember watching this movie when I was around 12 years old. Had never heard of it before just started watching it and loved it. It’s It has become one of my top 3 favorite movies. It also introduced me to the world of the blues and some of the best blues musicians/singers.
I remember buying the soundtrack on CD and playing it over and over again. I think I was the only pre-teen that knew of Cab Calloway and could sing “hi-de-ho” .
wow, I was a weird kid
I’ve been on both sides of this meme
The interesting thing was she was/is a middle school teacher. You’d think she would encourage questions, not just look it up.
But I guess she was trying to help me not be ignorant because I was just killing time … at a party
reminds me of a story:
Got invited to a dinner party of people I didn’t know well, they were friends of my then girlfriend.
So we were sitting around before dinner chatting and drinking and I brought up a question about something that we were all talking about. I don’t remember what it was but the point was just to keep conversation going and to interact with people. BUT one lady just looked at me and said “why don’t you just Google it?!” Shut down conversation completely.
Sure I could Google it Karen but that doesn’t make for good conversation!
Welcome to Lemmy Here from a permanent ban last year for … Fuck I don’t even know just pissed off the wrong mod
Negative motivation is the real way to make changes.
It’s great to have goals and positive things to look forward to when you reach those goals.
But to be consistent in doing the hard work to reach that goal it’s better to scare the shit out of your self by asking
“what happens to me if I don’t do the work?”
For the last 50,000 years or more we had to walk and move constantly to survive as a species so it makes sense that our bodies would have evolved to reward us for moving.
