Interesting low-cost measure to not use a front-derailleur

The S2 model aimed to give riders an uphill climbing gear but without introducing the complexities of a gear-shifting derailleur, tensioned cables, and handlebar shifters. Engineers at SRAM came up with a solution that’s hard to imagine for other bikes but not too hard to grasp. A freewheel in the back has two cogs, with a high gear for cruising and a low gear for climbing. If you pedal backward a half-rotation, the outer, higher gear engages or disengages, taking over the work from the lower gear. The cogs, chains, and chainrings on this bike are always moving, but only one gear is ever doing the work.

Well it doesn’t seem like there’s been another Reddit exodus, especially from looking at the user numbers for Lemmy. There hasn’t been a big screwup lately like with Meta or Twitter (but I think Bluesky is absorbing the Twitter refugees currently).

My experience is the opposite. The hours 3-6 feel more dangerous to me because many drivers are in a rush and very uncourteous. At night there are just way less cars on the road and in general they are much more courteous. However I generally don’t ride light enough for them to suffer from very bad sleep deprivation.

I carry a bag of salt to pour around me at stop lights

Well my light is angled downwards hopefully it’s not a problem. But I’m not sure if it’s actually brighter than modern car lights.

Actually I got it on Aliexpress (link). There might be better priced options but I got this one because it comes with an adaptor for GoPro mounts so I could mount it under my bike computer. It’s otherwise much too heavy and large to mount on handlebars.

Feels safer than day riding too with a 2000LM light.

I got a Bontrager Spectre Wavecell because it felt the best on my head from all the helmets I tried and the tech is safe (MIPS is also very good).

I wear it from -15°C to +30°C and it’s good for me. The helmet is not the problem outside this range, it’s just generally too hot/cold, it isn’t the top of my head that gets way too hot/cold. As long as you don’t get an aero helmet I think you won’t have any temperature problems.

I hope it’s well taken by citizens. Here in Canada a sector of the population gets up in arms when there are investments in cycling infrastructure. I know that kind of rhetoric exists in the UK but I’m not sure how much that applies in the rest of Europe.

Always been intrigued by this because apparently stickerbombing reduces chance of theft. But I can’t imagine doing that to my bike, I love the clean aesthetic.

Front/rear lights I always find a bit concerning because the claims on brightness often isn’t true so you don’t know what you’ll get. But also man, are lights expensive sometimes.
