I see, thanks. It mentions biometrics on that page. Maybe if my next laptop has a fingerprint reader then I should look into passkeys more.

Interesting thanks. I will probably just stick with passwords + 2FA for the moment because I’m lazy. It would be cool to have something like a hardware key though.
I have no idea what a passkey is and I will probably only learn what it is when they become mandatory

I don’t think it’s just Putin which is why I mentioned the megalomania of other Russian elites. But Putin surely made the final decision to invade.
I didn’t say Russian only lies. I said Russia “has lied about pretty much everything for a long time”. That is not the same thing.
assuming the opposite of whatever Russia says
I’m not just assuming the opposite of Russia’s statements. I’m drawing a best guess conclusion based on two premises:
I think it’s likely that mineral wealth would have been part of the Kremlin’s motivation to invade. Along with general megalomania and irredentism.
Maybe the primary cause was Putin’s megalomania, or indeed megalomania among quite a few Russian elites.
Occam’s razor would dictate that Russia is probably lying if they say they’re not interested in Ukrainian minerals, given that the Kremlin has lied about pretty much everything for a long time.
Putin is even saying he wants to sell minerals from Russian-occupied Ukraine to the US. Clearly he wants to profit from minerals in Ukraine.

It’s hilarious that you accuse the US and Ukraine of wanting to get rich from mineral rights, but you won’t accuse Russia of the same thing. In reality there will be rich people in each of those countries wanting to profit from minerals.
Why do you think that what Russia says is true?
Russia said they didn’t poison Alexei Navalny in 2020, but they did. They said they didn’t kill Alexander Litvinenko, and they said they didn’t poison Sergei Skripal, but they did both of those things.
Yeah I’ve heard of that, maybe I should look at it more. Hopefully the Lemmy codebase is fine though. I’m just saying it’s possible, even if perhaps unlikely, that something could be lurking in the code which nobody has discovered yet. The XZ Utils backdoor was well-hidden and happened to be discovered, but maybe malicious code isn’t always discovered.
Even a technical lead of an instance may not have read every single line of code because codebases these days are pretty large. Typically you might look at the code you’re working on, but not necessarily the entire codebase.
Hopefully Lemmy doesn’t have anything malicious in it, but it’s possible to sneak malware into open source projects. This sort of thing happened to XZ Utils last year.
I’m not raising a conspiracy theory point, I’m raising what is surely a valid point: everybody assumes that someone else will read all of the source code and understand it all.
Codebases are large, and malicious code can be obfuscated. Hopefully Lemmy’s code is fine, but I definitely don’t know for certain that it’s completely clean. I just hope that it is.
Have you read all the code though? Everyone assumes that somebody else will read every single file of the source code, and understand it all. Malicious code can be obfuscated.
Maybe there’s something in the codebase that sends all our data to North Korea… who knows.
Ethernet is obviously better but running ethernet around your home can be a pain in the arse
Someone could create an instance if they wanted right? The code is on GitHub
Maybe there’s more to it though, I dunno.
I’ve never banned anybody for saying their view, and I don’t think I’d support someone being banned for saying their view, as long as they’re being respectful, and as long as they’re not advocating anything criminal.
Personally I would like to be able to talk to people with different views, in a civil manner. But Lemmy.ml doesn’t seem to want that. If you post something that they don’t like (even if it’s a very moderate view and is expressed in a completely civil way) then they ban you. They seem to really hate moderate people.
Ah okay. Maybe I will just stick with a password + 2FA for now though. I’m sure I will eventually learn more about passkeys when I make the effort to read more about them.
