To me ‘snitches get stitches’ means ‘don’t rat out the people you were doing the thing with because that makes you a traitor’.

Least people who do shitty things… don’t tend to make that distinction. It’s often used as a threat to bystanders and even victims. IE I took your lunch money, if you go to the teacher about it, we will beat you up.

If you are talking friends who participate, the implied violence would be unnecessary really. You roll on your friends when doing something against the rules, your friends will never include you in their activities again.

  • In defence that’s not a landline issue, that’s a god damn rotary phone. Touchtone phones were invented in 1963. So… people under 60 years old have likely never used them. I’m nearly 40, I’m pretty sure cordless phones were pretty standard in my house.

That being said, yeah even cordless phones, you’d surely know the basestation isn’t where the sound comes from. Though I’d imagine it’s probably just in ease of communicating the joke, as the focus is to make sure the reader isn’t mistaking it to be the girl speaking, as if you put it at the earpiece that’s still roughly where you’d put a speach bubble to represent the girl speaking without a phone.

  • There’s a lot that I would say that are just crazy to me when they become inherent by definition indoctrination.

Circumcision and childhood baptism also fall into those categories for me. Want to devote yourself to a religion have at it. but how the hell is it not a huge ass red flag to encourage the major changes and opinions at an age that clearly decisions can’t be made.

Baptism at least can be ignored… it’s a bath at worse, a sprinkle at best. But it’s still a facepalmingly stupid concept at best when the child clearly isn’t the one making the decision (obviously excluding when adults decide to be baptised, I have no objections there).

Same for teaching kids to pledge allegiance to a piece of cloth. Same for “teach them to love their country etc…”.

No you know what, teach them accurate history of their country, and of other countries. When they have understanding of it, let them compare, see what our country does good, did bad, with context of what other countries did that was good, and bad.

Honestly my only hope is… that the lone gunman suicidal “I want to go down in a way to be remembered” kinds of shooters. Learn from this, and consider shooting a wealthy CEO instead of a school or movie theatre etc…

I in no way want more violence… but I believe it would be nice if the “we can’t do anything about” violence, were more top of the power chain instead of bottom.

I’d assume it’s only a 1 shot joke for the comic (or only exists in very obscure alternate sources. Considering the mere existance of the flatbear is the punchline of the comic, it would be pretty damn lazy writing.

Though I’m sure at least a person or 2 made them in TTRPG campaigns via players using animate object, or necromancy/ressurection spells on bear rugs or cloaks.

  • Personally I disagree with the statement, first off, I don’t see an alternative explanation offered. the point is an easy analogy to give them rough concepts. looking at the problems listed in the OP.

Gmail users believe the only ways to access a Gmail account are through the official web client at mail.google.com, and the official Gmail app for iOS and Android.

First off there… so the web client off the bat… what’s the problem there, that we aren’t burrying them with “oh if you like you can use alexandrite, or one of 30 other web clients, and then tell it the instance”. The point is we’re trying to reach out to the non tech savy. If their assumption gets them to something that works, then there isn’t a problem, just as not knowing that they can install an e-mail client to check their gmail, isn’t stopping them from using gmail.

Now the andriod/ios clients, that is the one drawback, you do have to tell them the name of one of the apps, and tell them to pick the website they made their account on from the dropdown. It’s not a huge deal but it is an extra step. If the goal is to reach out to the non tech savy though, the goal has to be to minimize the steps as much as we can.

Then it goes on to say people are picking instances based on moderation politics etc… Lets face it regular people don’t… and they don’t care. Really like 2% of people actually hit points where moderation is a visible thing to them. usually because they are on the edge of a political side.

  • No it in fact is not. Selfishness causes any number of negative consequences - suffering, hostility, crime, conflict, rebellion, war, death… So it’s bludgeoningly obviously irrational, and therefore cannot be rational self interest.

for 99% of people yes. but if you happen to be at the very top of the ladder and if things are broken enough you can be self interested into destroying the world. Fact is the guillotines aren’t being rolled out. The protests that happen are pretty consistently swatted with barely a weeks hindrance to the years between them. We all suffer the consiquences of the olligarchy, the ones making the laws and decisions are largely above those hardships.

  • Yeah I would say more accurately, if you asked 100 people specifically about “have you ever heard of Mastadon, or Lemmy” you’ll get 99% “huh”.

if you ask the same people about crypto… I’d expect closer to 80-90% to have at least heard of crypto… Especially now that we have a president about to lead a crypto scam.

  • I mean, in terms of use… Name all the decentralized networks that the general public is aware of? Mastadon roughly 1 million active users, at a time when musk has let Xitter shit the bed to drop… to like 200 million users.

Meanwhile there’s a bitcoin option on every ATM I go to in every gas station. Fact is if you ask around the table at thanksgiving, unless you have a very nerdy family… odds are no one will be familiar with any web 3 items you name, other than crypto… and largely crypto will mostly only be known for it’s worse applications. A speculative gambling investment that is popular to use to buy illegal goods with.

My point is, they gave enough lip service, half gestures etc… to try and convince the “don’t murder everyone in Gaza” some hope that they could be worked with. IE, they delayed one shipment, Harris didn’t meet with Netanyahu that one time.

Again fully agreed they were ineffective half measures, but that was enough to let the Pro-Isreal lobby go in super deep “OH MY GOD LOOK HOW ANTI-SEMETIC THEY ARE!!! I NEVER”.

IMO I think the common thread of democrats policies… is they keep thinking if they put one foot in both camps, that they will get both camps.

So, on Gaza… they took the stance of. “let the genocide continue, send the weapons, but also send sternly worded letters”.

Result: The stand with isreal crowd hears “The democrats don’t support isreal”. The stop the genocide people, hear they are still supporting the genocide. Result, everyone hates their stance.

Hence why musks superpac sent 2 ads, one to jewish areas pretending to be the harris campaign saying “I stand with palestine”, and an ad to the muslim populated areas saying “I stand with isreal”.

Same on the border, instead of announcing how BS the “Migrant crime” claims are, or how bad for everyone mass deportation is, she just said “I tried to give you everything on the border, you stopped me”.

Phones is absolutely a valid point these days, IMO OS > web + web browser in terms of what you can get.

MS and google both know what porn you are looking at. What you buy from your PC etc… MS knows how much time you are spending playing games + has screenshots of all your encrypted conversations etc…

  • Honestly I disagree… From what I’ve heard from app developers etc… ads generate far less money than even $1 app sales. Now maybe that’s the brokers etc… But there’s also a reason why Hulu shut down their purely ad supported tier, and none of the big companies are leaning into that. Only “subscribe and get ads” lower dollar tiers.

I’m no super expert, but I think ads are still very inefficiant ways to make money… the profit per customer is very small even with the most privacy invasive blast you away with everything aspect. I don’t claim to be an expert, but it appears to me an ad supported service needs around 100x more users to make the same money as a low cost service. However, in actual userbases it goes closer to 1000x when that offer is on the table.
