The impossible part is that it isn’t publicly available. It’s not an open model.
Is Midjourney available for use locally now? Or have you misunderstood Midjourney taking 30 seconds to generate from their server as happening locally?
It’s probably just too broad to treat as one war, but I always return to reading the fall of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Empire. So many poetic, cinematic moments that for western civilisation defined our subsequent history. Where are we if Crassus doesn’t desperately need a triumph but gets fed molten gold instead? If Marc Anthony and Cleopatra rule the Mediterranean from Alexandria? If a comet doesn’t convince half of Rome that Caesar is a literal God?
Is it clothing or is it something she’s… holding? Can she hide things she’s just touching?

No source code and no federation just makes this a worse app with less liability for bad actions. Not sure why he’s pushing this before those are ready. Pixelfed itself isn’t exactly finished yet.

221·1 month agoI love my Steam Deck. It’s literally beside my hotel bed right now, while the Switch is at home with two kids under 10. But:
- the docking and detaching experience is frustrating as hell
- it is significantly heavier and yet feels more fragile.
- it has profiles but not comparably to the Switch in terms of use and UX
- and the controller experience is very hit and miss.

- It spent 2 months just literally randomly shutting off bluetooth - you had to go into desktop mode and re-enable with a Linux command until they patched it - but that’s not even it - whenever it did that, it also disabled the sticks!.

- I have multiple entries in the controllers screen - none of which can be renamed or show indicators as to which controller they are - where every now and again the Deck decides sorry, I don’t recognise that controller anymore. Please come walk across the living room and awkwardly stand in front of the telly pressing buttons on the Steam Deck’s face to re-pair things.

- Oh and controller layout schemes are a cool and powerful feature but way too complicated for me to explain to an 8 year old.
If “I just want to pick up a controller after work and forget what Philip in Marketing said he thought the project was going to look like”, or “I want to buy games once and share them with my kids” or even “I’ll throw this in my bag to kill 20 minutes at the waiting room” are factors, the Steam Deck is very much not superior in every way.
Again. Love my Deck. Almost exclusively buy “Verified” games now. Halfway through a Nintendo game that somehow is easier for me, a software dev to find ajd emulate on Deck than on a Nintendo console. But the Switch has been a remarkable console to have in my living room. The first console I bought (actually now that I think of it, that my wife bought for me) since Wii and before that since PlayStation 2. I’m not really a console player. I have 1000+ games on Steam. Still Switch excels at many things and the sales figures should make that obvious.
I think there’s some useful context, if not a good defence of this story.
It’s one of the original stories told by Reverend Awdry told to his 2 year old, measles-ridden child in 1942 war-era England (Wait, is this making it worse?).
Awdry would sing/recite old poems to Christopher, who then pressed him for further details that turned into a story.
For example, the opening of that episode of Thomas features the Limerick that prompted the story, which was around at least since 1902:
In the original story by Awdry, there is only a single tunnel, and the train is completely blocking the line and essentially ruining a business. So stubborn is the engine, that they have to dig a new tunnel beside the old one. The rails are removed and “a wall” are placed in front of the tunnel, for safety - to prevent trains literally running into the wrong tunnel and crashing. The Fat Director/Controller is also pretty unsympathetic deliberately - he commands people to push and pull the train out without success, but doesn’t himself help - “My doctor has forbidden me to push”. However the original books follow the realities of steam engine and railway operation far more closely than the TV series did (and as a result, the original series, closer to the books, were far more realistic than the later ones).
As portrayed in the TV show it definitely comes off more villainous. But in the original telling we have to take away 70 years of Thomas trains having faces, personalities, relationships and familiarity. When originally told, the Henry story didn’t even take place in the same “universe” - there was just 3 abstract stories about trains, loosely based on old rhymes and news stories.

72·2 months agoThey were observed finding one ROM on the Internet, ever. They do have their own emulator(s).
Nintendo is a bunch of humans. If my boss asks me to see if I can find the installer for an old version of our software, you can bet I’ll check anywhere before volunteering to go scrape old hard drives.
They are not “banning” emulators. They take action against two sorts of problems: leaking, and distribution of copyrighted material. Yuzu was taken down because they stupidly started charging for help with playing Tears of the Kingdom before its release. Other emulators have been threatened because they included binary console OS software (rather than actually fully emulating the console itself) or actually distributed game ROMs.
Dolphin has been around for about 20 years now. Why? Because they don’t distribute copyrighted material, recommend against doing so, and don’t require to include any binaries from the console.
Here’s all they had to both say and adhere to, to “survive” the supposedly blood-hungry Nintendo for longer than some of the people reading this have been alive:
Where can I download game ISOs/ROMs?¶
Short answer: You don’t. Buy games and dump them with a Wii.
Long answer: Downloading commercial games is illegal and thus strongly frowned upon by the Dolphin developers. To prevent legal issues, this includes gray areas like downloading games which you purchased earlier. You don’t necessarily need to own a gaming console by yourself because you can buy a game disc and dump them with a friend’s console. On the other hand, copying a friend’s game dump is considered illegal again.
Also, lol @ the idea that it’s hypocrisy for them to use their own game files. You understand that’s what a ROM is, right? It isn’t magic. It’s just a binary file.

“Ripping” ROMs, or dumping them, takes almost no effort. If you have the cartridge reader its about as much work as taking photos off an SD card. Certainly nothing at all like cracking a game, which is pretty much software development.
Please consider informing yourself before forming strong opinions.
Just so we’re clear, are you under the impression that “ROMs acquired from the Internet” represent something other than Nintendo’s work?

As an Irish person it kind of serves them right? Halloween is supposed to be this special, singular, liminal night when the barriers between the mundane and the supernatural are weakest, when dinner is laid out for the spirits of those that died as if you can speak to them there and then. Then the next day it’s gone, and new year starts, cold and bleak at first then warming in temperature and tones.
Turning it into a month+ of commercialised spooky/sexy stuff just makes it less unique, less Halloween in every way.
I propose that a new costume night be created, in summer so people can actually wear them, and return Halloween to the darkness it belongs to.
You can disable the built-in apps.
They can’t be removed as pre-installed apps are part of the OS image. It’s a bit like the immutable distros now popular in Linux. Any update to the OS would just re-add them anyway.
These apps aren’t exactly huge in disk size so disabling them is safe and effective. It will reduce battery and memory usage if you would ordinarily have them running in the background for some reason.
