  • One of my most memorable experiences skating on “no skateboarding allowed” property in Jr. High, where a RAC came up and one of my friends said “Um, excuse me, suck my dick sir.” I thought “omg we are fucked” and just ran.

Another time in HS I wasn’t even skating, I just had my skateboard with me, and had climbed up onto a wall outside a mall loading dock. I saw the RAC’s coming and got worried they’d be dicks like always and ran into a Walgreens in the mall. I thought they weren’t following me and I’d kill time, so I stopped to do my blood pressure check at the machine, then went to piss. On my way out an undercover RAC slammed me up against the wall and said into his radio “we got him!” Another RAC came and started patting me down, and when he got to the back of my Alternative Tentacles record company shirt, right where the words “Stop Skate Harassment” were printed, I looked back at him, and he said “yeah I see your shirt.” They then said I was a cocaine dealer who had just gone and flushed my stash down the toilet. I was like 16, had never done drugs, and was like “whaaaat? Are you crazy?” They let me go but told me not to come back for 3 months. I worked in that mall though so I ignored them.

  • From my understanding, it only checks DNS when it initially connects, and so if the public IP changes the connection just stops working.

This is pretty standard TCP network behavior for long duration connections. The client queries dns for the IP address, opens a socket, and leaves it open as long as needed.

One thing that would help here is some kind of keepalive feature, like a client to server TCP connect or SYN, or better yet a higher level protocol signal. Check your client to see if there is some tunable keepalive. It may be set so something long like 1h.

  • But here’s the thing: all those other platforms, the ones where I unwisely allowed myself to get locked in, where today I find myself trapped by the professional, personal and political costs of leaving them, they were all started by people who swore they’d never sell out. I know those people, the old blogger mafia who started the CMSes, social media services, and publishing platforms where I find myself trapped. I considered them friends (I still consider most of them friends), and I knew them well enough to believe that they really cared about their users.

They did care about their users. They just cared about other stuff, too, and, when push came to shove, they chose the worsening of their services as the lesser of two evils.

As funny as this is, it’s worth mentioning that it seems like Hans Reiser has really come around to understanding the crime he committed and is genuinely making an effort to turn himself around.

    https://ftp.mfek.org/Reiser/Letters/ Number 2 … / reiser_response.html

I was asked by a kind Fredrick Brennan for my comments that I might offer on the discussion of removing ReiserFS V3 from the kernel. I don’t post directly because I am in prison for killing my wife Nina in 2006.

I am very sorry for my crime–a proper apology would be off topic for this forum, but available to any who ask.

There’s too much to quote here, and it’s too spread out, but I think that while we make dark humor jokes (and I am certainly not saying dark humor is inherently bad) we should also appreciate the progress he has made.
