@whoareu cloudflare tunnel can easily help you do that. the only limitation is your domain will need to be from cloudflare. It works well, I am hosting an instance without any public IP and without exposing any ports.

If not a Pi, try to go for those (used)mini PCs, they will allow you a bit more power than a Pi and cost just about the same. Then get docker on it and you’re all set for easy deployments.

And look up homelab youtubers, they have some good tutorials for beginners. thats where i started. Jim’s garage would be my recommendation, especially his older videos about hardware, security and networking basics. You will need to learn these to keep things secure.

@Know_not_Scotty_does same experience with toshiba, have been using a 3tb drive for the past 10 years and its still going strong!

I use homeassistant with frigate. detection, alerts and recording, it supports it all and the mobile client is useful to monitor it remotely.

I’ve heard good things about mvgroup.

I’ve been using mailcow for about a year and i am very satisfied, it checks all your boxes and is easy to configure and deploy over docker.

Torrents do work, but be careful if you use any public trackers your IP can get a copyright notice and Oracle takes it seriously, your instance can get shut down.

For transferring files i find sshfs to be the fastest and simplest method.

This was one of my main needs when i started to look for a platform on the fediverse, while wordpress was the closest thing to what i needed it had partial support for federation but thankfully a little known gem called ‘hubzilla’ turned out to be exactly what i needed to set up my digital home.
