  • They don’t care about performance, they care about cost.

There are two different customers here. The site wants to serve the absolute minimum required resolution they can get away with before the user goes somewhere else. This saves money on bandwidth and storage. The ad networks customers are the advertisers and they want their ad to be high quality and presented quickly so it’s harder for the network to trim the fat.

That really is not a satisfying answer. It is incredibly nebulous and even if it did have a nice definition I guarantee most software developers will tell you a lot of software rarely reaches that state.

I can see why they might want to avoid 1000 GitHub issues bike shedding things but they could open source the code and just not have open contribution

  • Orwell - "the party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command”

Huxley - “the perfect dictatorship would have the appearance of a democracy, but would be basically a prison without walls, in which the prisoners would not even dream of escaping. It would essential be a system of slavery where, through consumption of entertainment, the slaves will live their servitude”

    I would agree

  • The two party System is more a consequence of first past the post than the system they are voted into.

If you look at Canada as an example in the last 30 years the parties on the right have amalgamated and have been rewarded for it as the vote splitting on the left is what gets them elected. It’s just a matter of time until the left follow suit and then 🎉 two party system.
