  • I’ve started watching a YouTube channel of a guy trying to handbuild a homestead in Alaska. I forget where he said he came from, but like you, it was somewhere without snow.

On a recent video, he recorded himself seeing what I think he said was the third snowfall he’d ever seen and the first with accumulation. It was nice to watch his clearly genuine joy and surprise.

  • Not that they need me to advertise for them, but my understanding is that there’s quite a lot of flavor variety in the “Hot Ones” sauces. I do not enjoy spiciness, so I cannot comment on their quality beyond that.

The Kent Survival YouTube channel does also frequently reference the many tastes in their sauces, but again, I cannot personally comment on quality.

One of my old co-workers literally carries around an unlabeled bottle of white sauce that he claims is both flavorful and spicy. Our other erstwhile co-workers disagree and say that the spiciness overwhelms everything else, but he swears by it. I can see if he’ll disclose what it is.

Regardless of whether you pursue any of my suggestions, I hope you find the balance you seek!

  • Because I formed these habits in the nineties and 00’s, well before git was a thing; and because nothing I write matters, other than possibly to my employers, in which case I do use (primarily) git … Or other version control. (Believe it or not, I’ve used subversion.)

Most of the documents to which I apply this are things like my resume and DNS server. No one but me will ever care.

Also, I like you both for asking this question and for how you put it.

  • I used to have this problem, but now I go with one of two solutions:

    • filename-$(date +%F) (or similar)
      • example: notes-2024-12-14.txt
      • can be expanded to include further time details if more than one iteration per day is released
    • filename-Mk#
      • example: product-design-MkII (Or Mk2 if you prefer)
      • pretty much infinitely expandable and you always know which is latest
