Paywalled article, but I copy-pasted from someone who has access:

If Beyond the Spider-Verse was hitting theaters next summer, we would’ve heard about it by now, as Sony would’ve assigned it a release date.

2026 seems perfectly doable, but I’m told that it would be extremely unlikely that Sony would want to release an animated Spider-Man movie and a live-action Spider-Man movie in the same calendar year, as the studio is better off staggering those two franchises.

So not only is 2027 more likely for that reason alone, but over Labor Day Weekend, I heard that Sony scrapped most of Beyond the Spider-Verse for creative reasons, and because of that decision, the movie would be unlikely to debut before 2027 given the detailed animation it requires.

While the Beyond the Spider-Verse team was taken aback by the change in direction, I’m told they’re relieved to have more time to work on the sequel, as it’s important to all involved that they stick the landing on this Oscar-winning franchise.

UPDATE: This information may not be accurate. Daniel Pemberton, composer of the first two Spider-Verse movies, had this to say:

Don’t really ever want to weigh in on this sort of stuff BUT would you ever believe there could sometimes be stuff on the internet that might not always be particularly accurate? Hmmmm…

That’s just an objective fact. Spider-Man works better animated, and Miles Morales is a much more interesting character than the Peter Parker we get in the live action movies. And I like the MCU Spider-Man movies, and I think Tom Holland has been great. But SpiderVerse has more to work with, more options to be creative, and more artistic flexibility, and they have taken advantage of it.

Not to mention that the last spiderverse movie ended on a big cliff hanger while the Tom Holland wrapped up its story completely. If either movie should come out first, it should be the spiderverse one.

The second one would have been just as good, the cliffhanger ending ruined it tho

It didn’t try to be a full movie. Which might have worked if it was just 6-12 months to the third

I think they kinda killed interest in the animated movie by making the second with a cliffhanger ending. I loved the first and was psyched to see the second, and the moment I heard it had a cliffhanger ending I lost all interest in watching it.

It’s kind of amazing how they set up multiple antagonists in that movie while having no closure to any of them.

When I heard it was to be continued, I decided I would just wait for the 3rd and watch both at once. I’m sure I’ll love it but I’ll wait

They scrapped most of the movie for creative reasons? Wow. The way it was written, I would think the second half was mostly laid out. Part 1 was freaking fantastic and it’ll suck waiting two and a half more years for it.
