    Huh.

    Today I learned (from the comments) that there are places where stores haven’t been doing this for decades.

      It’s why I stopped going to Costco. You just saw me check out, you don’t need to review everything in my cart again, gtfo with that bullshit.

        And some of the time it’s not to see if you’re shoplifting, it’s to catch cashiers who don’t scan an item, but take your money, and pocket it. Far cheaper for the store to have one security guard at the door holding up everyone after they paid, then to review security footage of cashiers, or pay cashiers a decent wage where they don’t feel like they have to steal.

            Costco is a paid service with terms and conditions you agree to before shopping there, so it’s not like any other store doing this shit (and at those other stores you CAN just ignore the door guard)
