I used to think it was ridiculous to say 👌🏼 is used as a sign for white nationalists. Now I believe it. The whole point of a dog whistle is for it to be hidden in plain sight.

That was the point IIRC. 4chan /pol/ came up with the idea to ruin the OK hand gesture because it was ridiculous and funny to them.

Thankfully my friends know I would never mean this because this ours one of my default emoji. Unless it’s specifically the white one and not yellow, in which case, if one of my friends used white emoji I’d definitely question them directly on it.

It’s literally the first time I’m reading of this.

Damn, there are benefits to not being terminally online I guess

I go see what the fascists are saying directly in their safe spaces once and awhile instead of hearing about it 2nd+ hand. Do not recommend.

To be more specific: The sanitized idea in their non-verbatim words (I think this was in the lead up to the first Trump campaign?) was to see if “leftists” would let them ruin an already long established funny hand gesture to the point anyone who wasn’t white nationalist would stop doing it out of fear.

Then alt right grifters picked it up and it kinda worked…if you let them have that win.

👌🏼 is used as a sign for white nationalists. Now I believe it.

Just help them along and let them have it: cooperate with your fellow white nationalists by following their direction on culture. So docile.

Anytime someone says “can’t use 👌🏼 anymore, white nationalists use it” instead of resisting that by reasserting the more common usage, they’re letting a minority like white nationalists take over & decide the meaning of cultural signs for the majority: yes, that is holy cringe.

Language & cultural conventions take cooperation: stop cooperating with & caving to white nationalists.

I believe the OK one was just 4chan going

“lol, the left is so gullible if we say the OK sign is a sign of white nationalists, they’ll publish it”. Of course the reality is, when they sent it out, the actual white nationalists saw it and started using it.

which is kind of the thing that they do. Just like pepe… to my knowledge the original author doesn’t seem to be a bad guy. Meme itself was used in non horrible ways for years. But today you see someone join something with a pepe avitar or similar… you know there’s a 90% chance that whatever community you are in is about to get a test of how they react to the racial slurs that are about to come up.

Or you know you can go to the most famous and talked about ones. IE that symbol of good fortune that existed in countless peaceful cultures for thousands of years.

Yup, as long as there’s a group of people with a shared understanding, any symbol can be compromised. All it takes is the right context for understanding.
