TBH, I think people are much nicer face-to-face. It’s cathartic to shit on somebody else’s hard work online, but it’d be too awkward in person, so people tend to just be nice.
To be fair, a lot of webcomics are mediocre dross.
turns out the cost of production and distribution was doing a lot of heavy lifting after all.
So were a lot of print comics too.

Look at the ones that have been around for a few years, they tend to be pretty good.
