I never noticed there was a “right way”. I see now that there is an ISO standard that is used for (eg) traffic control signs, but that alone doesn’t make the other way backwards in situations where someone has hand-drawn a sign.
Id guess right handed people draw it “backwards” like that because they are more likely to draw a circle counterclockwise from the top, leaving them in position for a slash in that direction.
Why does almost everyone seem to draw the 🚫 symbol backwards? Even the Ghostbusters logo is guilty of this crime:
