    I know it’s a joke, but just in case:

    Fire alarms really are smoke detectors. Smoke kills you way earlier than the heat would. It also has the insidious property of being able to kill you without waking you. Flames haven’t leveled that skill. The alarms (as the name implies) only alarm you. They don’t do anything to contain the fire.

    On the other hand there are fire suppression systems (aka sprinklers). These usually have a piece of heat-sensitive glass that breaks if the ambient temperature rises above “this is not a fire” levels. That breakage opens a hole in the water pipes, which is not at all what fire likes.

    That popcorn thingy combines the two properties of only going off when there’s actual fire in the room and of not doing anything against it.
