  • I wonder how much Epic games makes at the end of the day. most companies that do stuff like this operate at a huge loss, functioning only through investment capital until they starve out their competition and become the head of a monopoly at which point their investors become even more pointlessly wealthy. However I believe this works so often because those competitors are also operating off of investor capital and eventually their investors decide to sell out and switch teams to get some of their investment back. How does this work with Valve? Unlike companies previously discussed Valve is a privately held company and has control over their own company, as evidenced by the fact that they seem to make discissions in favor of long term goals instead of short term profits, a concept that has grown foreign to the US market. On top of the fact they are currently the leader in online game sales, I’m unsure how epic can justify, what i would assume, is a huge sum of money constantly paying for exclusives. Maybe im wrong and the pie is so large Epic is currently operating financially soundly. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Regardless we should all be happy that this market is not a clear cut monopoly, competition is a consumer win.

  • As someone who just last week cut windows out it does feel like this can be true. I am annoyed that xorg doeskin handle multiple monitors with varied refresh rates, so you use wayland instead, but wayland doesn’t play nice with remote access programs, and then you find out that nothing will allow you to use gsync/freesync unless all of your monitors can use it. Also as someone who uses Autocad daily I have to figure out a gpu passthrough VM at some point.

So i am losing the some of my “ideal” setup in my move to linux, but im still happy to lose a smidgen of things I want for the far greater advantage of not worrying about windows updates reinstalling bloatware, or harvesting data that goes above and beyond what anyone else has been doing up to this point. I’m kind of unwilling to have my OS monitoring me, and i can read the witting on the wall, it will only get worse.

  • We as a society have given up on doing literally anything to shame or punish people who are rude selfish assholes. In fact a large contingent of society seems to celebrate selfishness now. Considering how your actions impact others is something I feel like capitalism has destroyed by showing the world that the only thing you should value is getting ahead by any means necessary, just pretend your actions have no consequences and sell your soul and you too can definitely never be rich too. I truly believe seeing this play out in real life for our entire lives has just shown people considering other people is a recipe to be worse off than being selfish. Capitalism is a plague.

  • Yeah at that point it kind of morphs genre from dungeon grinder to isometric action. That being said I think isometric action is a way better game type due to the level of involvement and a challenge that’s skill based; whereas I find dungeon grinders to boring from overly simplistic controls and gameplay loops.

That being said I am tired of so many game just giving you 3 real buttons, but this is the problem with making games to make money, if you want to market broad you have to keep it simple.

Behind every problem in life lies capitalisms ugly asshole.

  • I was once told that it isn’t about making your mind blank, it’s about acknowledging the thought that rolls into your mind, and then letting it go. The idea being to train yourself to let trains of thought go. When I’m being a huge dick to myself with my inner monologue I can sometimes remember “oh yeah! I can just not think about this” and then I’ll let my mind go elsewhere.
