It’s honestly the best course of action for one’s mental health

The amount of assholes I’ve blocked in the last year has been staggering

The amount of those assholes who are relatives would shock most people

i had to real-life block my aunt and uncle. it was always something about how dumb liberals are and “you’ll understand when you’re older”. nah fuck you, i don’t need this shit in my life.

The only reason they get to say “you’ll understand when you’re older” is because they have something to protect as they got older.

In other words, they got theirs. And they don’t want to fucking share.

        It’s a shit justification.

That’s always been the easiest way to distill their m.o. – “Fuck you, got mine”

Sometimes i think of wealth disparity in terms of an enormous game of musical chairs. Maybe I’m being naive, but i at least like to think that there’s enough chairs for everyone on the planet to get a seat. People carrying that “fuck you, got mine” mindset are hoarding chairs. The worst offenders are hoarding square miles of chairs. At the end of the day when the shit hits the fan though, everybody only needs/fits on a single chair. All that hoarding for something they’ll never use while denying folks who couldn’t get one at all.

It just makes no fucking sense to have that much money.

I’m haunted by a line from Silicon Valley. Rich people use money to keep score.

When I play online games I just mute everyone. Gaming is my relaxing time and I don’t feel like listening to people throwing around insults or being obnoxious. There is very little team strategy discussion in most games anyway.

Dota player here. I sometimes even mute people before they have said anything, simply because I don’t like their vibe.

Sometimes I don’t even want to deal with the friendly people because interacting can be exhausting for me.

Enh, I haven’t blocked anyone and I’m getting along fine.

I have however blocked all the porn and furry shit. I don’t need that coming up while I’m scrolling at work.

        I haven’t blocked people.

I do extremely liberally block communities, though. I need all with the lower volume here and there’s a lot I’m just not interested in.

I used to worry that it was a losing strategy, because if I don’t block them then they will have unfettered access to the new people of the Internet. But then I started to think it doesn’t matter, I’d rather have my own mental health.

Unfortunately lemmy is a lot less active when you ban afford Assholes, muck rakers, and people just looking for fights.

It’s good for your mental health, but bad for lemmy in general. Those people need to be called out on their shit, downvoted and banned if necessary.

Compare it to those scam emails that are written in bad english to weed out the people too intelligent to fall for it.

They prefer you banning them, so they can influence the people listening more easily.

I’m very glad I got it out of my system when I was younger and was debating on Reddit over the stupidest of shit

Now I’m too busy irl, and if comment replies aren’t productive or entertaining to me, I just swipe them away and forget they ever existed.

I often comment offering info on the subjects I know, and found that when an asshole is arguing I don’t need to answer when i know I’m right. Other commenters will back me up naturally by agreeing. (unless i’m wrong of course)

So in most cases unless you are just spreading lies, someone else will correct the assholes. This kinda removes the stress of troll replies i find
