  • He’s been really determined to make it work - even takes it on vacation. He gets decent rest until he wakes up and takes it off, usually around 3 or 4. He has the triangle-shaped mask with the face steps. I didn’t realize there were different types. I just ordered him the n30 under-nose one and the p10 nasal pillows with a soft strap. Thanks for the advice!

  • I feel this. I have a really hard time with holidays and i hate the media portrayal that it’s a beautiful day for everyone. Abuse, neglect, illness, and everything else continues regardless of the calendar. This will be my second Christmas without my mom. I keep thinking of all the things she did over the years to make Christmas nice for me and it’s made me want to participate a little more this year.

  • See if your county has an MHMR office. If they ask, instead of giving those numbers, just tell them you were diagnosed with an intellectual disability. They may offer to put you on a waiting list that sounds ridiculous - like 12 years or something. Do, it! People move out of the county and drop off the list all the time. They may question your ID diagnosis because you seem very on top of things and you’re a good communicator. This is an situation where the speech issue may work in your favor. I know that sounds horrible, but sometimes you have to play the system.

Did you receive special ed services in school? If you did, they may have had a transition specialist who gave you paperwork to find services after graduation. I don’t know the details, I just hear it talked about in meetings. If you want to attend a community college or training program, there may be services available there too.

  • Short bursts of great stuff are better than long periods of shitty stuff.

If an annual pass to a museum is $100, i would spend two day’s dollars buying 3-day passes to lots of different museums for a friend and me. Do we auto transport to the city? Or does the museum just appear at my house?

On the other days i would take a couple of laps around a track in some cool cars, have sips of some very expensive whiskey, and ride short sections of trains around the world.

During the week i would search the internet to find great $1 specials at bars all over the world and on weekends i would slowly have a beer on a beach in Mexico, vermouth in Barcelona, coffee in Modena, a mojito in havana, …

  • My son is vegan and he makes fun of himself - If you vape, you’re vegan, and you’re in a band; which one do you talk about first? Was funnier a few years ago when people carried around those giant vapes. We harassed him a lot for saying, “i can’t eat that” - well, yes you can, but you choose not to- so, now he’ll say he prefers to avoid animal products. If people ask, be honest and answer succinctly - I’m trying it to see if it makes me feel better, or whatever. The hate isn’t from choosing your own food. It’s from the endless conversations and superior, more informed attitude about it - same as anyone who makes one thing their identity - politics, religion, etc.
